LIFTING TECHNIQUES AND EQUIPMENT DON'T PREVENT WORK-RELATED BACK PAIN
Many hard-working people need to file a workers' compensation claim after they injure their back while lifting at work despite taking all the precautions. Now, we may know why.
According to a recent report published by the British Medical Journal, there is little or no research evident that training in lifting techniques and the use of lifting equipment are effective in preventing back pain associated with work injuries. The researchers evaluated techniques for lifting or moving patients as well as samples of baggage handlers or postal workers. The results were that training programs or lifting equipment did NOT reduce the risk of back pain, disability or sick leave. "The findings challenge the current widespread practice of advising workers on correct lifting techniques," stated the researchers.
