How Dangerous Is Driving On Wet Roads?

Tags:

car accident on wet roadsDid you know that the Federal Highway Administration estimates that there are, on average, over 5,748,000 vehicle crashes each year? Approximately 22% of these crashes – nearly 1,259,000 – are weather-related. The vast majority of the weather-related crashes happen on wet roads –either wet pavement or during rainfall — 73% on wet pavement and 46% during rainfall.

According to the FHWA report, over 900,000 crashes occur on wet pavement and nearly 600,000 car crashes occur when it is raining. Over 350,000 persons are injured and nearly 4,500 persons are killed in the wet pavement crashes. Over 225,000 persons are injured and nearly 2,800 are killed in the car accidents which occur during rain.

These numbers are stunning. With the Tampa Bay rains we have already received and are expected to receive, all motorists must heed special attention during and after the rain. These statistics indicate that it is more dangerous to drive after the rain than during the rain storm. So, be careful and watch out for those who aren’t.

SmartMotorist.com gives drivers these tips for safe driving in the rain:

• First and foremost: slow down! It takes longer to stop or adjust in wet weather.

• Stay toward the middle lanes – water tends to pool in the outside lanes.

• Maintain proper following distance (3 Second Rule). This needs to be increased in wet weather.

• Watch out for brake lights in front of you.

These tips seem easy, but many drivers don’t follow them which can result in a car accident. I represent a lot of good people who follow these and other safe driving tips and still get injured in car accidents due to the negligence of other drivers.

Be safe during the rain and especially after it!
