Two pedestrian accidents lead to two deaths in one day in St. Petersburg and Pinellas Park.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, a St. Petersburg man died Wednesday after he was struck by two cars. One car stopped, but the first car that hit the man failed to stop and fled the scene. According to the report, Levi Brodie Forsyth was walking near the intersection of 54th Avenue N and Haines Road in St. Petersburg when he was struck by an unknown vehicle, propelling him into the path of a 2015 Ford Edge. The driver of the Ford stopped after Mr. Forsyth was struck, but the other driver fled. Mr. Forsyth was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where he died. The first vehicle was described as a small to mid-size vehicle, possibly a red or gold SUV. The Florida Highway Patrol is asking anyone with information about the first driver to contact officials at 727-582-5806.
Earlier in the day, a 29-year-old Clearwater woman died in a separate pedestrian accident after being struck by a vehicle along the 10300 block of Belcher Road. The Tampa Bay Times reports that Jessica Pepin was crossing Belcher Road west to east near the road’s intersection with 75th Street at about 1:30 p.m. when she was hit by a car. Ms. Pepin was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the vehicle stopped and cooperated with crash investigators.
Were these pedestrian accidents caused by a negligent driver or a negligent pedestrian? The investigations are still pending. However, what is known is that two families lost a family member because of a pedestrian accident. Florida leads the nation in pedestrian accident fatalities. Walkers, be smart and look out for traffic. Stay on sidewalks and only cross at intersections. Drivers, know that walkers may not follow the law. Expect them to cross the streets outside of the crosswalks. Keep your eye on them as you approach and slow down.
Drive and walk safely, but watch out for these who don’t.
