A 17-year-old pedestrian sustained serious injuries this morning after she was struck by a car in St. Petersburg, according to the Tampa Bay Times. St. Petersburg Police report that the incident occurred on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street at 54th Avenue North, less than a mile from Northeast High School. Police are investigating the pedestrian accident and have blocked off both directions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
Unfortunately, Florida is infamous for pedestrian accidents. In an earlier article, Tampa Bay Times reported that Florida remains the nation’s most deadly state for those pedestrians. In fact, the seven most dangerous metropolitan communities for a pedestrian accident are all in the Sunshine State. The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area is ranked seventh.
The CDC provides the following safety tips for pedestrians:
• Whenever possible, cross the street at a designated crosswalk or intersection.
• Increase your visibility at night by carrying a flashlight and wearing retro-reflective clothing.
• It’s safest to walk on a sidewalk, but if one is not available, walk on the shoulder and face traffic.
• Avoid distractions such as electronic devices that take your attention off the road.
Drivers have to be careful as well to avoid a pedestrian accident. Always, look around for pedestrians. Once a pedestrian is spotted, keep an eye on the pedestrian until you pass him or her. Don’t assume that the pedestrian sees you and will walk safely.
Simple steps can avoid the tragedies associated with pedestrians similar to the one that occurred this morning in St. Petersburg. Prayer and thoughts are extended to this 17-year old pedestrian and the driver involved in the crash.
Drive and walk safely and watch out for those who don’t!
