Well, it has happened again in Tampa. According to WFLA, a car accident occurred last night just after 9 p.m. on Memorial Highway, north of I-275 near Tampa International Airport. Investigators indicate that this Tampa car accident was caused by a driver driving the wrong way on Memorial Highway.
According to the article, the Florida Highway Patrol reports that an elderly woman was driving a Toyota Corolla southbound in the northbound lanes on Memorial Hwy when she crashed into a Ford Explorer occupied by four people. All five people involved in the crash were transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Although many of the wrong-way car accidents involve drunk drivers, this accident shows us that these types of automobile accidents can be caused by sober drivers as well. With all the construction going on in Tampa Bay, including Interstate 275 and U.S. Highway 19, it is not difficult for drivers to get confused. This confusion can cause them to drive the wrong way.
This automobile accident is a reminder of how important it is to watch out for other drivers. You can be the safest driver, but others on the road may not be and cause you to be involved in a car accident. So, it is crucial that drivers pay attention at all times.
Also, this car accident should remind us of the importance of underinsured motorist coverage protection. The four people in the SUV in this car accident may have combined medical bills, lost wages and other damages that may be more than the elderly driver’s bodily injury liability coverage. If that is the case, if the driver of the SUV in this crash (or the occupants) did not carry underinsured motorist coverage, the injured persons are left responsible for their damages or can sue the elderly driver. However, if underinsured motorist coverage, they are protected and can be compensated for their damages.
Drive safely and watch out for those who don’t!
