You can be the safest driver and never cause a car accident, but there are too many bad drivers out there that put you and your family in jeopardy of a car accident. That is why uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is so important.
For example, on Tuesday, a St. Petersburg woman was arrested on a DUI charge in the middle of the afternoon after the car she was driving ran into a school bus. According to, the woman was arrested on charges of DUI, careless driving and refusing to submit to a breath or blood test. The report notes that the arrest is at least the third DUI for the woman.
Police said the crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. as a Pinellas County school bus was headed east on 30th Avenue N with three children on board. The woman was driving behind the bus with her 3-year-old son in the car, police said. As the bus stopped in the area of 24th Street N, the rear-end car accident occurred. It was unclear whether the woman will face a child abuse charge for having her child in the car with her while she was reported to be driving while intoxicated.
It is because of drivers like this that you need to check your automobile insurance policy to make sure you have adequate uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. If you or a family member are injured in an automobile accident because of the negligence of a driver with no or little liability coverage, the uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage may be the only coverage that pays all your medical expenses and/or lost wages because of the crash.
Drive safely and watch out for those who don’t. But, before you do that, check your automobile insurance policy to make sure you have uninsured/underinsured motorist protection.
