Walking at night proves to be deadly for a Pinellas County man. Last night, a man was killed after be hit by a car as he walked on Curlew Road near U.S. 19 in Palm Harbor. According to the Tampa Bay Times, a Ford Explorer driving west on Curlew Road struck the man about 10:15 p.m. as he was crossing the road. According to the report, the man was walking in a crosswalk but against a traffic control device. He was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center and later died from his injuries.
This tragedy reminds us of the importance of safety measures that could prevent a similar accident. The report is silent on what this man was wearing, but walkers should wear reflective gear and carry a light if walking at night. Drivers always need to look ahead for pedestrians.
