Wrong Way Drivers Remind Us of Need for Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Tags: , , , , ,

Wrong-way drivers seem to be on the rise. One woman was killed as she drove north on the inside southbound lane of Interstate 75 near State Road 52 in Pasco County and hit a tractor-trailer. Another was a teacher who drove the wrong way on the Selmon Expressway and Interstate 75 before he was pulled over in Gibsonton early Sunday. Yet another was closer to my area – Sunset Point Road and U.S. Highway 19.

According to Tampa Bay Fox 13, a 28-year-old driver was driving south in the northbound lanes of U.S. 19 near Sunset Point Road around 2 a.m. on Monday morning, when he headed straight into the path of an ambulance. The driver swerved to avoid hitting the ambulance, but nearly hit another car in the process. That driver got out and yanked the keys from the ignition in wrong-way driver’s car. The wrong-way driver was arrested and charged with DUI after telling police that he thought he was in Tampa, and was unfamiliar with Tampa roads.

These drivers are perfect examples of no matter how safe of a driver you are, there are other drivers on the road that put you at risk of being involved in a car accident. Therefore, it is important that you protect you and your family with uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage on your automobile insurance policy. This coverage will protect you or your family in the event you are injured or killed in a car accident caused by a driver that does not carry any or inadequate bodily injury liability coverage.

Check your car insurance policy today before you are involved in a car accident. If you do not have uninsured motorist coverage on your policy, get it even if you are the safest driver in the world.

Drive safely and watch out for those who don’t.
